Readers Respond: How Could Your Tax Software Improve?

Responses: 9

By , About.com Guide

Tax software keeps getting easier to use with each passing year, but there is still room for improvement.

How could your tax software be improved?

  1. What did you expect from the tax software that you didn't get?
  2. Any suggestions for improving this feature?

Efile issues

IRS rejected our return due to a mismatch of taxpayers birthdate with IRS/SSA. Same date was efiled for the past 12 years with other software and no problem. Bothersome because Turbotax offers no assistance. Hundreds of Rejection Error Code 0522 tells me people don't know when they were born. I believe there is a communication issue between Turbotax and IRS.. TURBOTAX IS IN DENIAL.

Trusts

Why can't these business packages provide a simple schedule D import (or robust import for that matter) from financial institutions? Managed accounts are a pain to data enter.

Its never the same.

Have used the software for over a decade and never had a problem. It's never the same either other than the code changes. Guess that is job security. But some years have been easier to use than others. Each year brings a new look and way to do it. This can be good or have a bad feel to using it. Used the guarantee option just in case of an audit once, it wasn't needed. Yes, it is a little steep in price too. I guess they sell enough to not need to worry about the little gut buying it. Intuit makes fine software of many varieties. I have many of them.

Tax Act

I also agree a mention of Tax Act would have been helpful. I use it and like it. It's a good price.

TurboTax State needs to do more work

TurboTax has a lame state tax system. Make the state taxes easier, the software should be doing more work for me or the state part should be free.

Mr

It would help if the reviews looked at the State tax prep software capabilities, as well as the Federal. Do either of the two majors do a better job than the other?

10 Tips for Software

I have yet to find one that figures Social Security with it.

State Tax Software

I expected my state tax software to have more/better help resources. I could have saved $30 and just filled out my state return myself. Improvement is obvious: state returns should have same helpful tax interview as federal.
