Question: What Microsoft Money Data Can I Import to Quicken?

You have been using Microsoft Money, but want to change to Quicken personal finance software.

Answer: Converting your Microsoft Money data file for use in Quicken requires the Quicken Data Converter and some time and patience.

Quicken converts and imports the following Microsoft Money data:

  • Bank account transactions (including split transactions)
  • Investment account transactions
  • Category List

The Money to Quicken data converter does not convert the following from Microsoft Money. These items will need to be reconstructed in Quicken, using the Help function in Quicken:

  • Unexercised employee stock option grants (ESOGs)
  • Memorized transactions
  • Online account activation information
  • Budgets
  • Classes
  • Loan accounts
  • Planner data
  • Exchange-traded options
  • Abbreviations and comments
  • Reconciliation state of transactions
  • Accounts with no transactions

Investment Bonds and Stock Splits

Quicken tracks bonds differently from Microsoft Money does, and your Quicken data file will hold the cost basis and price values for the bonds formerly tracked in Microsoft Money. Quicken will adjust the number of shares in the Edit Shares Bought window to reflect the number of bonds you own and the number of shares in the Quicken Transaction List to reflect the correct total share information.

Stock splits created in Microsoft Money will not convert and will have to be entered into Quicken manually.
