Change the Backup Drive Default in Microsoft Money 2004 and 2005

By Shelley Elmblad, About.com

Microsoft Money 2006 handles backups differently than earlier versions. How to set up backups for Money 2006 is discussed here.

Microsoft Money 2004 or 2005 can be set up to do an automatic backup to a CD or other media. Before you begin setting this up, you need to identify the drive letter which represents your CD, floppy or DVD drive. To find out, open My Computer and look for the CD-RW (or other media) drive and determine whether it is set up as drive D: or E: or something else. A floppy drive is usually assigned to drive A:.

Steps to create the backup in Microsoft Money 2004 or 2005:

  1. Go into Microsoft Money 2004 or 2005 and click on Tools.
  2. Click Options and find the Backup tab.
  3. On the Backup tab, type the path of the CD/floppy/DVD drive and a name for the backup file.
  4. Click OK.
Now, each time you quit Money 2004 or 2005, the backup file that is automatically created is written to the writable CD or DVD drive. It is imperative that you remember to change the CD or other media often, or you will be gaining little benefit over Money’s default of writing the automatic backup over the last backup file on the hard drive.

See Backup Options for Microsoft Money 2004 and 2005 for an explanation of how Microsoft Money 2004 and 2005 handles backups by default.
