Apparently they still haven’t fixed the attachments problem (probably waiting to make us pay for it - I got news for them!). This might be a problem for Vista only, I don’t know but from the blogs XP users don’t seem to have the problem. Still, Quicken is supposed to be Vista compatible. I’ve gotten most of what I need by only updating to release 3. I’m scared to try any additional updates.

What problem are you having with Quicken 2008 attachments in Vista? I am not having any trouble with this, so it is not an issue for everyone. I would like to know more about this.

Shelly,

This is just one exchange between Intuit and me. It would be great if you could get through to Intuit and get some action!!

Thanks for caring,

Al Twilling

Dear Allen Twilling,

Thank you for contacting Quicken Customer Care.

I can understand Allen that you are unable to see attachments after installing Quicken to Windows Vista. The attachments are getting overwrite and attachment Icon is not appearing.

Well Allen I wish I could help you however apologize to say that it’s a know issue with Quicken (installed on Windows Vista). We are working towards the same in order to resolve this issue. We are sorry to inform you that we do not have any Turn Around time on the same.

Also I would like you tell you that a special team of engineers is already working on it and pretty soon it will be fixed. So request you to not to worry at all as this is nothing wrong at your end or in the data file.

Allen, I hope you will agree that the best I could do was to inform you about the situation. I appreciate your patience and need cooperation.
Have a wonderful day ahead!

Respectfully,

Is there any intent to bring Quicken up to its previous capability. I particularly miss the ability to see attachments. I am currently running 2008 Deluxe on a Vista machine. If I have to save receipts etc. separately then I probably will drop Quicken and use MoneyDance. I have used Quicken since it came on 3.5″ floppys and have sworn by it until the last two “updates” after which I swear at it. Talking to someone who doesn’t speak English and doesn’t know anything about Quicken doesn’t help either!

If your problem weren’t so annoying, that response would be humorous. Intuit needs to find a better translator for their off-shore support team. I’ll look into this to see if it truly is an unresolved problem or if there is a fix. In the meantime, I encourage you to go ahead and run an update to get the latest release. If there ever was a problem, a patch may have been included in one of those updates.

Thanks,
Shelley

(5) A. Twilling says:

Hi,

On your recommend I’ll do the updates again. (I was once at 6 and it was so bad I had to completely remove and reinstall. On the recommend from someone on the Quicken blog I only upgraded to 3 and that seemed to get back the basics.) If I end up having to uninstall again I’m finished with Intuit. There will be a learning curve for Tax Cut and for MoneyDance or Money but hopefully none of this nonsense.

Thanks for your efforts,

Al Twilling

PS If you think that response was annoying or humorous you should have listened in on some of the telephone conversations that preceded it!!

Me Again,

I’m up to Rev. 7 now. Still can only view the last scanned attachment and that in very large size (only a portion of the document at a time). Also got a couple of new entries in my accounts. One with a dollar value for a payee. It will be interesting to see how things reconcile next statement time!

(7) Frustrated with Quicken says:

Having threatened to sue Intuit for fraud and misrepresentation after using it for almost 15 years without it being able to reconcile DRIP entries to my statements, I was put in touch with their tech escalation dept. At least these people seemed to know their material, and their English was comprehensible.
However, I was told flat out that many of the things I needed the program to do were ‘known issues’. That is industry double-talk for ‘yes we know it’s a bug, but it’s either too expensive or too time-consuming to fix, so we haven’t bothered…’.
I recently spoke with the US Customer Care Mgr who told me that providing better training to their ‘outside’ techs has been a very high priority. But I was astounded to learn that the program was written based upon the belief that everyone uses a brokerage to manage their investments!!! They’d never heard of the Beardstown Ladies Investment Club or the NAIC; so they assumed that when users downloaded their records from the brokerage, they’d reconcile automatically. Therefore NONE of my shares area correct; my spin-offs, corporate buy-outs, and other combinations and permutations are all inaccurate, except for the few stocks I bought AFTER I began using Quicken.
Also, when there is a corporate spin-off, Quicken goes back to the original purchase date of the parent stock to allocate a portion of those shares to the new company. How can they create a company ten or more years before it existed?
If I didn’t have so much time invested in the program, I’d dump it. All they could say was they would submit some of my ’suggestions’ to the programmers.
If there is anyone out there who would like to find a lawyer to start a Class Action lawsuit based upon what I’ve written, please contact me. I’ll be the first to sign on. This was a deliberate Corporate misrepresentation of Quicken as a program that would allow one to manage investments and other assets, when it can’t even add correctly.

(8) A. Twilling says:

Hello again,

OOOOppps. I see I’m not the only one with problems (even if those are of a totally different sort).

Anyway, I now remember one of the reasons for not going above revision 3. Since I updated to 7 I can no longer see the downloaded transactions. The download goes just fine and the little flags telling you you have transactions to review pop up but there are no transactions to review. This is true if you let Quicken do it or if you download the OFX file and manually import it. This is the major reason for previously not updating.

I guess I’m going to break my word and delete Quicken and reinstall up to revision 3 one more time. MoneyDance is looking better all the time. I just wish it would do better with investments. I’m also going a little crazy trying to keep up with two programs - time to maybe cut bait, I’m tired of fishing.

(9) A. Twilling says:

OK

I’m back to revision (release?) 3 and the download/update of transactions is working again. Of course this must be a problem with me or my computer - couldn’t possibly have anything to do with Quicken or the idiots that have taken over Intuit and destroyed what was a great, rock solid finance program.

(11) Shelley says:

Wow, what a mess! With Quicken 2007, I experienced a problem you described with getting the downloaded transactions notification but then when I would click on a tab to view the transactions, they did not appear. If I closed Quicken and re-opened it, the transactions would be there, waiting to be accepted. I have not had this trouble with Quicken 2008, on my XP or my Vista PC.

Regarding attachments, are your attachments stored in C:\Program files\Quicken\Data\Attach ? Quicken cannot retrieve attachments from any other folder, probably due to a Windows registry setting.

As for the images looking too big, try to reset the view if you haven’t already done so.

I sincerely wish I could be of more help to you.

(13) A. Twilling says:

Shelley,

The “View” tab is greyed out. This is probably connected to the reason why when I scan the second document into the attachment the first document is not available. The Icon column on the left never shows the document(s). I have gone to the attachment files and verified that they are stored (at least some of them) but there is no way to connect those files to any particular Quicken entry. This is the problem which is “a know issue with Quicken (installed on Windows Vista). We are working towards the same in order to resolve this issue. We are sorry to inform you that we do not have any Turn Around time on the same.”

I’m about to blow another $30.00 and give Money a try. I just hate the learning curve bit. MoneyDance is very nice program but has limited capability with investments and I go crazy with the double entry system requirements! We’ll see.

(14) Shelley says:

Oh wow - that IS weird. Is this the same problem you are having with attachments: http://tiny.cc/Attachments . Because if it is, it’s been around since last year, and it’s a “known issue”. I think it’s time to edit my Quicken Attachments info to mention that this is a potential issue.

My point of view on all of this? Scrap Quicken 2009 and work out the bugs in Quicken 2008. And, that not only goes for Quicken but for Microsoft Money and any financial software that is developing new releases while the current one still needs work. So, yeah, Money has some bugs too. But if you want to take it for a spin at least you can try Money Plus free for two months.

Hi Shelley,

Yep !! That is my problem. I don’t know how I missed that particular blog before but it is right on the nose. I also notice that “Quicken Steve” has alluded to waiting until they can charge us to fix their screwup (2009). If I could get that fixed and stay with Release 3 to avoid the other problem all would be ok from my perspective.

Thanks for the help,

Al Twilling

Hi Shelly,

Hope you are still checking this blog. I’m a little slow, but I just realized that you said that you don’t have any of the problems that I complained about. Does this mean that you have a different version (I have 2008 DeLuxe) or a different version of Vista (mine is Home Premium)?

Still confused, frustrated and angry,

Al

(17) Shelley says:

Hi Al. I have Quicken 08 Premier and I’m running Vista Ultimate. All the attachments I’ve been using are PDF’s or they are from the Windows clipboard (select text from a receipt for an online purchase, then hit Ctr+C, then tell Quicken attachments to get the text from the clipboard). I’ve tested multiple attachments and it works for me - but it clearly is not working for you and other people.

Since you do not track investments with Quicken Deluxe, you might want to try SplashMoney Desktop - which could have all the features you need. It has a free 30 day trial, too. Not quite as “pretty” as Quicken, but definitely well-organized and support is responsive. If you try SplashMoney or another Quicken replacement, please let me know what your experience is if you have time to do so. I appreciate the input.

I have the same problem with Quicken 2008 — Downloaded transactions are recorded as being there, but I cannot access them to accept. “Glad” to know that I am not the only one.

So glad to discover I’m not the only one disgusted with Intuit. I’ve used Quicken since version 2.0 for DOS and I’ve never had the problems I’m having with v2008.
“Preferences” need to be reset EVERY time the program is opened and it will not print under ANY circumstances. I’ve defended this software for years, but no more. I will go back to keeping records with a quill pen and parchment before I’ll waste any more resources on Quicken.
