If you have itemized tax deductions, like home mortgage interest or donations to charity, you will need to use a higher TurboTax version. If you're not sure whether or not TurboTax Free Edition is right for you, just start using it and the software will tell you if you need to use another version.
TurboTax Free Edition is available online only, and you can start a return without setting up an account. But, to save the work you've done and return to finish later, you'll need to set up an account.
