Keeping Your Home Inventory Secure

Passwords are Not Optional
To keep prying eyes away from your home inventory data, your home inventory software should have security features like password protection. You should also set up a user profile with a password on any computer you store financial data on. You can set up profiles for Windows Vista, a user account in Windows XP or a user account for Mac OSX.

Backing Up is a Must
Should a disaster strike your home, chances are that your home inventory data will be lost just when you need it most. Be sure to store a copy of your home inventory information away from your home.

You could store your home inventory online with online home inventory software, or by using a secure online back up service. If you do not wish to store your data online, be sure to print out a home inventory report from the software and create a back up of your data on to removable media like a USB thumb drive or CD. Then store the home inventory back up and report outside of your home, in a safe deposit box at your bank, or at the home of a trusted relative. You could also email the home inventory back up file and the report to a trusted individual for safe keeping.
