Why does Microsoft Money force me to use a Microsoft Passport account?

By Shelley Elmblad, About.com

Question: Why does Microsoft Money force me to use a Microsoft Passport account?

Using a Passport account was optional in versions earlier than Microsoft Money 2006. Microsoft Money requires Passport to share data files with others, such as your accountant or spouse.

Answer: You can set up a Passport account during the Microsoft Money installation, although you are not forced to use it. However, without Passport, Microsoft Money will not be able to use any online features like transaction downloads.

Read over the Microsoft Passport privacy policy to learn more. If you still feel uncertain about using Passport with Microsoft Money, click the box to work offline when you sign in with Passport. This will stop your account data from being uploaded, but you will not get account updates until you sign in without the offline option.
