Mvelopes for Personal Finances Review

Mvelopes is now known as Finicity Money Manager, and retains the same features covered here. Most Mvelopes reviews found online are on affiliate websites and just repeat Mvelopes marketing and feature information. This is an unbiased review of Mvelopes software for envelope budgeting.

Envelope Budgeting Concept in Mvelopes

Mvelopes operates on the envelope budget system of saving a portion of your income weekly or in other increments to pay future bills and keep a budget. Spending categories are the "envelopes" which are set up for each expense.

Mvelopes Differences from Traditional Financial Software

There are three major differences between Mvelopes and other personal finance software such as Quicken or Microsoft Money:
  1. Mvelopes focuses more on budgeting your money. Most other personal finance software focuses more heavily on account management, with Money and Quicken covering all areas of financial management.

  2. Mvelopes operates entirely online, requiring no software download on your computer. This avoids tech support hassles and makes sharing finances with another person, such as a spouse, easy to do.

  3. Mvelopes is subscription-based: $39.60 quarterly (averages out to $13.20 per month), $129.60 per year (averages out to $10.80 per month) or two years for $189.60 (averages out to $7.90 per month).

Mvelopes Strong Points

Mvelopes is a stronger budget manager than most other financial software titles, but it lacks all the features other financial software can offer. However, some other financial software is bloated with far more functionality than many find useful.

You may have an unlimited number of accounts in Mvelopes and update them all online with transactions being posted to these accounts as they are posted at your FIs. You need to be sure that your bank, brokerage or other FI supports the type of downloads Mvelopes uses. You can look for your FI on this list.

Mvelopes Free Trial: Free for How Long?

I am always suspicious of free software trials that require me to enter my credit card when I can download so many free trials with no strings attached. Mvelopes offers a 30-day trial but you will need to enter your credit card, select a subscription period to pay for in case you continue using Mvelopes, and you must cancel the trial via chat on Mvelopes' site. Warning: some people have trouble with canceling Mvelopes!
