Overview of Encrypting Quicken Attachments

Encrypt your transaction attachments and your account attachments for additional security. When you attach a statement or a check to an account or transaction, you want to keep the personal information on these documents secure to prevent identity theft.

Quicken Attachment Image Management

Important: When you create a Quicken account or transaction attachment, you must first save the image file to your computer and once that file is attached in Quicken, the old image remains on your hard drive outside of Quicken. Therefore, it is best to delete any copies of images used for Quicken attachments that may be stored elsewhere on your hard drive.

Encrypting and Unencrypting Attachments

When you view a Quicken transaction or account attachment, you will see a message at the top of the attachment screen that says, “This attachment can be view outside of Quicken. Would you like to encrypt it?”

Setting encryption on a Quicken transaction or account attachment is simple: just click on the blue underlined ‘encrypt’ to turn encryption on or off for an attachment. You will see a message at the top of the screen for viewing that attachment which says the attachment can’t be viewed outside of Quicken, with a choice to unencrypt the image. To unencrypt the image, click on the blue underlined ‘unencrypt’.

Temporary Removing of Encryption Message

When encrypting a Quicken attachment, you may see a message telling you that encryption must be temporarily removed while viewing the attachment. Do not be alarmed, encryption will be reestablished when you are done viewing the attachment. This message occurs if your operating system is Windows 2000 or XP, which use the FAT32 file system. You should not see this message if you are using Windows 98 or a lower version.

Final Word on Quicken Data Security

Note that encrypting the attachments in Quicken only makes that image unreadable outside of your personal software. For true data security, set a Quicken file password.
