How to Set Up a Budget in Quicken

Choose Budgeted Income and Expense Categories

To select the categories for your budget, click on the Choose Categories button in Quicken.

Now you need to choose the income and expense categories for your budget, and if Quicken reminds you of this, click OK on the reminder to move on.

  1. To select the categories for your budget, click on the Choose Categories button on the lower left.

    Quicken Category Groups or Supercategories
    If you use Category Groups in Quicken, click on the box next to Show category groups and the Category Groups selection button will appear. Click it to choose Category Groups to budget for.

  2. Click on the categories you want to set up a budget for, or use one of these buttons on the lower left to speed up budget category selection:

    • Mark All: If you have defined all your own spending categories in Quicken already, you may way to click on Mark All.
    • Clear All: If you get overly-enthusiastic and click on way too many categories, you can clear all selections and start over again by click on the Clear All button.
    • Clear 0 Amounts: For editing budgets (not used when first creating a budget). Click to exclude categories you do not currently use.
    • To Clear One Selected Category: If you accidentally click a category you do not want to include in your budget, click on it again to clear the selection.

    Budgeting for Account Transfers
    You cannot categorize money transferred between accounts in Quicken, but you can budget for transfers you plan to make with the TO (account name) and FROM (account name) found at the top and bottom of the budget category selection list.

  3. Click on Ok when you have chosen income and expense categories for your budget. You can include or exclude categories later on if you want to.
