Pocket Quicken 2.5 vs. SplashMoney 4

Personal Finance Software for Your PDA or SmartPhone

Best Selling PDA Software

Two very popular finance software packages for PDAs and Smartphones are Pocket Quicken by Landmark and SplashMoney by SplashData. Each do a fine job of tracking finances, but there are some important differences between the two.

Palm or Pocket PC?

SplashMoney
SplashMoney 4 runs on Palm OS 4.0 and higher with 675k of available RAM for SplashMoney itself and 100k for data. If you want to use SplashMoney's online banking feature, you will need Palm OS 5.2 or higher.

Pocket Quicken
Pocket Quicken offers a version for Palm OS and Pocket PC devices.

  • Pocket Quicken for Palm will run on Palm OS 3.5 or higher and requires 450k of available RAM for Pocket Quicken with 120k for every 1000 transactions. Synchronizes with both Windows and Mac versions of Quicken desktop software.

  • Pocket Quicken for Pocket PC runs on Pocket PC 2003 or Windows Mobile 5, with about 400k of free RAM. Pocket Quicken for Pocket PC only synchronizes data with Quicken for Windows, it does not sync with the Quicken for Mac.

Online Banking

SplashMoney
You will find a ton of great features in SplashMoney, including wifi connectivity for online banking. SplashMoney connects to many banks using OFX "Direct Connect" technology over the Internet, which is the same technology used by Quicken. You will need a wireless enabled PDA or Smart Phone running Palm OS 5.2 or later to use SplashMoney's online banking.

Pocket Quicken
Pocket Quicken 2.5 does not take advantage of any Palm wifi features to offer any online banking features.

Synchronizing Data

SplashMoney
SplashMoney does not synchronize directly with Quicken or Microsoft Money. To synchronize with Quicken you must upload transactions to Quicken using SplashMoney's conduit (used with Palm's Hotsync), synchronize your PDA, then possibly adjust balances in SplashMoney. Microsoft Money users need to get their transactions into Money by exporting a QIF file and then importing that file into SplashMoney. There is a way around the multi-step import/export, though: SplashMoney desktop application, mentioned below.

Pocket Quicken
Pocket Quicken is specifically designed to work with Quicken on the desktop, and it does so without a hitch. Synchronizing data between Pocket Quicken and Quicken is straight-forward and easy.

Desktop Software

Both Pocket Quicken and SplashMoney can be used exclusively on a Palm PDA or SmartPhone, and many use them independent of desktop software. However, there are advantages to synchronizing to desktop software such as having another copy of your data, printing and having the ability to email reports to your accountant.

SplashMoney Desktop
SplashMoney bundles its own nicely-featured desktop software with the PDA application, and the desktop and PDA versions of SplashMoney synchronize data automatically via Hotsync. SplashMoney Desktop software includes account registers, financial reports, budgets and supports online banking. SplashMoney Desktop is available for Windows, but those running Mac systems will need to using the included HotSync conduit to transfer data to and from Quicken, Microsoft Money, any financial software that supports QIF, or a spreadsheet such as Excel which supports CSV imports.

Pocket Quicken
As previously mentioned, Pocket Quicken is specifically designed to be used with Quicken personal finance software on the desktop computer. Quicken offers the same features as SplashMoney, but Quicken Deluxe has a tax deduction finder and Quicken Premier offers support for investments. Both versions of Quicken include the ability to attach images of documents such as checks, statements and receipts to transactions and accounts. There are both Mac and Windows versions of Quicken.
