Adaptu is Closing. What to Do Now:

Adaptu has announced that it will be discontinuing operations of the online personal finance and budget software on February 20, 2013. The Adaptu Wallet app will cease to function at that time as well, and is no longer available for download to mobile devices. Adaptu says that the reason why the service is closing its doors is because the company would need to start charging customers a fee, and it was reluctant to use a paid model. This probably means that Adaptu wasn't seeing enough profit from ads and money saving offers, which is necessary for free online financial apps to stay in business. If they were to move to a paid model, chances are good that they would lose a number of customers to the many competitors that now occupy the online financial software space.

If you're an Adaptu user who has arrived at this article after the app shut down the website, you won't be able to get at your account to import transactions since the account will have been deleted. However, read on past the help for exporting data to suggestions for Adaptu replacements.

Take Your Data with You:

You may be able to import your old transactions into another online or desktop personal finance software. CalendarBudget free online personal finance and budgeting software has developed an import wizard to make it easy to move your data over after you export it. If you intend to do this, you must export your transactions from Adaptu before February 20. On that date, all your data and information will be deleted forever (Adaptu is not sharing any of your information). Here's how to export your data:
  1. Log in at Adaptu.com. If you have only been using Adaptu Wallet and not the web site to manage your finances, you will first need to complete some security questions before you can log in.
  2. Click on the Manage Accounts section, then click on Transactions.
  3. Change the time period on the right near the top, then click on Show. If you want to have a complete history of your transactions in the new app or software, set the time period to All Transactions.
  4. Down on the lower right, under the transaction list, click on the green Export Transactions button. Wait and let Adaptu pull your data - this may take some time if you have a lot of transactions.
  5. Depending on your browser settings, the file ExportData or ExportData with a number in parenthesis will be saved in your browser's Download folder, or your browser will ask you where to save it (I like to save to my Desktop).
  6. Save the file, which is a CSV file. If you want to view the data before you try to import it into your new software, it can be opened with Excel or another spreadsheet.

Whether you want to stick to an online app or you want to try desktop software for Mac or Windows, there are some very good options.

Optional: Delete Your Account:

If you don't delete your account, it and all information associated with it will be securely and permanently deleted on February 20, 2013. Adaptu says you'll get an email to confirm this. If you want to delete your account immediately, here's how it's done:
  1. Log in if you have no already done so.
  2. Click on Member Setting at the top of the screen on the right side.
  3. You'll see a list of actions under the title Member Settings, select the last one, Delete Account, and follow the directions.
