Web-Based Services

From Shelley Elmblad, for About.com

Definition: Web-based services in financial software consist of automatic account updates and transaction downloads from financial institutions as well as content such as financial news and stock quotes generated online but presented in the software on your desktop.

The two biggest names in financial software, Microsoft Money and Quicken, have web-based services and these services are becoming more common in other titles such as SplashMoney and You Need A Budget Pro.

Web-based services can also upload your information from your software to a secure website. Microsoft Money uses Internet-based services to upload data to MSN.com while Quicken offers uploads to Quicken.com. Both of these services allow you to view your financial information on a secure website when you are away from home.

Web-based services can either update your financial information with the click of your mouse, or they can operate at automatic intervals you set to download the information in the background while you work in your financial software.

Also Known As: Internet-based services, data downloads and data uploads
Examples: I use web-based services to download valuation updates to my stock portfolio as well as credit card transactions in Microsoft Money.
