Can I open an old Microsoft Money file in a new version of Microsoft Money?

From Shelley Elmblad, for About.com

Microsoft Money 2006

Question: Can I open an old Microsoft Money file in a new version of Microsoft Money?

If you are trying to restore a backup file created in an earlier version of Microsoft Money with a recent version, you probably will not be able to restore that file due to changes in data file structure which often occur between versions.

Answer: Although you cannot restore the backup file from the old version of Microsoft Money, you can open and convert the original data files.

If you are not sure how to find your Microsoft Money data files, read How to Find Your Microsoft Money Data File first.

Once you locate your files:

  1. Copy the Microsoft Money data files from your old computer to removable media like a CD or a USB thumb drive.

  2. Copy these files to your new computer into the My Documents folder. You can copy the files to another folder, but copying the files to this folder just makes things easier for most users.

  3. Open the new version of Microsoft Money and then click File, Open.

  4. Navigate to the My Documents folder, where you will find your Microsoft Money data files.

  5. Microsoft Money will begin to convert the data files to the latest format.
