Over the seven or so years that I've been reviewing personal finance software, I've probably awarded five stars to any of this software three times. This is because most software has something that's overlooked or some quirk that needs a work around, or the feature set isn't thought out as well as it could be when developers become disconnected from their user base.
Although You Need A Budget 4, widely known as YNAB 4, isn't the perfect software for everyone, the software does what it says it will with features that work smoothly. This software for Windows and Mac really keeps the focus on budgeting every dollar of income, so it doesn't have extra features that have little-to-nothing to do with budgeting. You can track financial accounts and transactions in YNAB, set up a budget that's flexible from month to month and you get a set of four customizable reports with areas you can click on to see more details for your spending, income or budget categories.
You Need A Budget 4 can actually help you to become debt free with a goal of living off of the previous month's income. How cool is that? Try it free for 34 days and use the online videos and discussion forums to learn how to get into the budget-and-get-out-of-debt mind set and to use the software effectively. There are mobile apps for iOS, Android and Kindle Fire, too. Read my YNAB 4 review to see if this budgeting software is right for you.
