After ditching Microsoft Money Plus last summer, Microsoft is now offering Money Plus Sunset Deluxe.
This Microsoft Money replacement is free, which made me suspicious: why would Microsoft give the software away when it had a relatively strong base of customers? It turns out that Money Plus Sunset is missing some features, including tech support, but still offers enough for someone who wants basic Windows personal finance software. Money Plus Sunset will also help those who are still using an earlier Money version to keep up with their finances while they search for a Microsoft Money replacement, should they want to.

Thanks so much for this tip. I have an old Money version installed on an old/slow PC. I lost my disk so I was in the process of converting my old image to a virtual image (P2V) and then running it on my new computer using free VMware. Once read your tip I was able to install the sunset version and restore my Money backup in a matter of 15 minutes. I ran a few reports and everything matches!
I live and work in the UK so can I use the Sunset version ?
I saw a note on the Microsoft site that seemed to suggest that Sunset could not convert non-US files ?
I wish I had better news for you. Microsoft Money Sunset version is only available for the U.S. Being that Microsoft has discontinued development at this time, I don’t think you will see a version for the UK or any other European countries. And, since the online services do not work in Money Sunset, automatic currency conversions can’t be done. You might want to try Moneydance.
A free script package is available to retrieve online statements and stock quotes into Money Sunset. It probably takes an hour to learn and configure the first time, but is “automatic” after that:
