Americans Turn to the Web to File Tax Returns

A whole lot of folks are turning to the Internet to use online tax software and to research income tax questions. Income tax-related websites drew nearly 23 million visitors in January 2006 according to a recently released comScore Media Metrix report. This is a 215% increase from December 2005. There was a 13% increase in traffic to tax sites when comparing January 2006 to January 2005.

The tax-related sites seeing the largest increase in visitors comparing December 2005 to January 2006 offer online tax preparation software and advice. They are:

  • HRBlock.com - 4.3 million visitors or a 171% increase
  • IRS.gov - 11.5 million visitors or 186% increase
  • TurboTax.com - 700% increase (number of visitors not provided)
